Vienna Dance Concourse 2021

Last Waltz at the Vienna City Hall?

The Vienna City Hall - Wein Rathaus

Nothing beats being in the city where the waltz was born to hear a recording of Straus’s Blue Danube Waltz being played.  This July, several USA Dance couples attended what might be the last Vienna Concourse held at the Wien Rathaus. Yusuf Mihaylov and Elena Simonova, along with Jon and Elaine Chow danced in the  Senior III Standard events on Friday and Saturday while David Getchell and Allison Gonzalez, along with Simon and Pu Fung danced in the Senior IV events on Saturday and Sunday. The competitor participation and the attendance this year were down, likely due to the pandemic with restrictions on travel and increased restrictions for the audience, but the level of dancing remained high, and the audience was enthusiastic as always.

The 27th Vienna Dance Concourse was held after a number of postponements, all of which were well communicated to the registered participants. The safety of the competitors, organizers, and spectators were taken into consideration by enforcing documentation of vaccination or proof of negative COVID test along with recording information for the purposes of COVID tracking. Although masks were not required by those dancing, they were encouraged for all others. The event was very well organized with plenty of staff on hand to minimize lines for COVID checks and registration. The smart phone app Top Turnier myHeats was used to track heat lists which made keeping track of the randomized heats easy. Most of the heats were limited to 14 couples with semifinals run in two heats as is common with WDSF events. The couples were given a break in the finals by announcing countries and couples in between dances. All announcements were made in German and English and ample time was given between consecutive heats.

The Vienna Dance Concourse is one of a handful of international events that present identical events on two consecutive days. For example, a WDSF Senior III Standard event was held on both Friday and Saturday. This allows competitors to minimize their travel expenses while picking up the opportunity to earn two instances of WDSF ranking points. This event does a very good job using judges from many countries and drawing high quality athletes from around the world all of which works to maximize the number of ranking points one may earn. (See upcoming article in American Dancer explaining the ranking system and use of stars) Seventeen countries were represented by the judging panels and twenty nine countries were represented by athletes.

David Getchell and Allison Gonzalez – San Carlos, California [Senior IV Std: Placed 4 of 46 Sat, 5 of 42 Sun] “We arrived in Vienna on Tuesday before the event in order to acclimate to the time change. We wanted to avoid yet again a jet-lagged David dancing the same wall over and over. This worked out well for us as we found a place for daily practice and still had time to visit old friends and fit in some sightseeing We love the venue and the high calibre of competition always present here.”

Simon and Pu Fung – Fremont, California [Senior IV Std: Placed 32 of 46 Sat, 27 of 42 Sun]. “We are so glad to have been one of the 4 couples from USA to compete in this event. As an average dance couple, Simon and I are blessed and honored to be able to participate with couples from many other countries. European dancers are energetic and aggressive on the crowded dance floor and genuinely friendly off the floor. In the future, we would arrive a few days early and stay at least one extra day afterwards for this event.  Vienna is a beautiful and safe city to visit!”-

Yusuf Mihaylov and Elena Simonova – Palm Beach Gardens, Florida [Senior III Std: Placed 18 of 88 Fri, 26 of 92 Sat]. “Along with what the others have said regarding this wonderful event, we really enjoyed the sense of comradery and team spirit that comes with representing the USA in an international event.  Along with cheering, we offered each other advice, both technical and personal, encouraging each other to obtain a maximum performance. When not cheering, team members were taking pictures and recording videos for the purpose of performance evaluation. On top of all that, we enjoyed all our time off the floor was well!”s

Jon and Elaine Chow – San Francisco, California [Senior III Std: Placed 29 of 88 Friday, 42 of 92 Saturday] “Dancing in the palace-like town hall built in the 1800s was on our bucket list since we first saw in on YouTube. It is like no other venue in the world with its grandeur and majestic setting. Dancing in Europe is an enlightening experience for the average US ballroom dancers like us. From the sheer number of participants (generally over a hundred in the Senior 3 age-group), to dancing with energetic European couples on a crowded dance floor where dancing becomes a contact sport, to the crowded coed dressing rooms where shyness is quickly shed, it is a definitely a different ballroom dance experience–one that we should enjoy and treasure.

There was a wonderful sense of togetherness and support for each other at this years event as we were all so happy and grateful to be doing what we love again.  We sincerely hope the organizers are able to find the financial support they need to continue this wonderful event in the magical Wein Rathaus.
